...With Nourishing Body Treatments
By now, you are surely feeling the effects of winter, especially on your skin. The reason is winter weather strips your skin of its natural oily moisture. The most common way to stay warm during the winter is by turning on the heat, but heat reduces the moisture from the air. In doing so, it also draws moisture from your skin, leaving your skin dry and itchy.
At this point, many of us lather on extra lotions and moisturizers in an attempt to stave off the tightness we feel on our skin. Unfortunately, simply adding extra layers of chemicals is not going to help your skin cope with the changes winter brings.
Here are a few tips to help you nourish your skin and keep it revitalized during any season.
1. Avoid chemicals! Most chemical moisturizers and lotions will actually make your skin even more itchy and tight. Usually the key ingredient in these moisturizers and lotions is water. While this might seem like a good thing at first, water does little to offer continuous moisture and will eventually lead to dryer skin.
2. Exfoliate. With all this dry skin, your body needs a way to rid itself of the dead cells and breathe. We recommend using Calypso Glow’s Seaweed & Sand Enriching Body Bar. Use the bar during your morning shower to revive your senses and energize your skin, followed by a moisturizer immediately afterwards, while your skin is still wet.
3. Choose oil rather than a lotion-based moisturizer. Oil will seep into your skin (and hair) and keep it refreshed and hydrated throughout the day, without the need to reapply multiple times in a twenty-four-hour period. Your skin needs what is being taken away from it during the cold season: Oil. Instead, opt for something a bit more natural – like coconut oil.
4. Moisturize immediately after a hot bath or shower. By applying a natural moisturizer to the surface while your skin is still damp, extra water is soaked up and sealed into your skin rather than further drying it out.
5. Protect your skin by offering extra layers like gloves and scarves. More importantly, remember to continue to apply SPF. Just because it is cold, it doesn’t mean the sun disappeared!
While these are a few ways to protect your most valuable asset: your skin, remember to take good care of yourself inside and out. Winter brings about many changes for some, such as a depressed mood, or a switch in eating habits. Rather than let yourself be swept away in the darkness, do your best to keep a close watch on what you’re fueling your body with, the types of supplements you’re taking, and the amount of exercise you’re completing. A little effort will go a long way in ensuring your body is alive and ready for summer, which is just around the corner! As always, if you need a hint of the Caribbean to motivate you, Calypso Glow offers a full line of wonderfully scented products to take you away, even if only virtually!
