DIY foot care for summer perfect feet.
Now that we're in the throes of a hot summer, the temptation to throw on your sandals, flip-flops or run around barefoot is inevitable. If your feet aren't looking particularly touchable we have an idea or five to help get them soft and smooth.
Healthy gorgeous looking feet requires regular weekly maintenance.
Here are five things you can do to get healthier and prettier throughout the summer:
1. Soak and soften - soaking your feet in warm water because is soften hard skin and cuticles making it easier to apply a treatment, remove dead skin cells. With a few essential oils, it can calm and relax you all at the same time.
Soak recipe:
• Basin
• Warm water (to fill the basin, half full)
• Mineral bath salts (half cup)
• Vinegar (half cup)*best for dry and cracked heels
• Baking soda (a couple of teaspoons)
• Coconut oil (a teaspoon, add more if your heels are really dry)
• Herbs or oils (optional)
Soak guide: Put all items into the basin together and soak your feet for a good ten minutes. Pat your feet dry.
2. Exfoliate and Polish - Treat rough heels gently with natural exfoliants. Incorrect handling of a pumice stone can do more than smooth away dead skin cells on the soles of your feet. Never use callus shavers or razors because you may cut yourself or get rid of more skin than you should which will only create wounds that can be quite painful.
Exfoliate your sole:
a. Wet pumice stone first
b. Gently rub on calloused area
c. Rub lightly and in a circular motion (stop if you feel any discomfort) for a few minutes at a time
d. Rinse your feet and repeat
Exfoliate your whole foot:
a. Make sure that your feet are clean
b. Gently massage the pumice, bath salts or your favorite scrub onto each foot, starting on the bottom half and then the top half.
c. Feel like making your own foot scrub? Here's a recipe you may enjoy:
Foot scrub recipe:
• Epsom salts (a cup) or granulated sugar or brown sugar
• Olive or almond oil (1/4 cup)
• Favorite essential oil (10 to 15 drops)
• Raw honey (2 tablespoons)
Scrub guide: In a bowl, mix all ingredients together, apply a teaspoon of the mixture to your feet, and follow exfoliation directions above. When finished, rinse and pat it dry.
3. Trim nails and push back the cuticles - After a nice foot soak your cuticles will be easier to manage. With a clean cuticle stick push back your cuticles to avoid excess growth. Trim your nails straight across to reduce ingrown toenails. Try not to go overboard when cutting. The result is usually painful and it may take a while to grow the nail back.
4. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize - did we say it enough? The not so secret trick to maintaining soft and supple skin is a good moisturizer. Coconut oil and shea butter offer deep hydration, which is great for dry skin areas like the feet. For best results, apply your favorite oil, butter or cream after every shower or bath as well as before going to bed.

5. Treat and protect - occasionally, we need a foot care treatment that rejuvenates tired feet and provides intense moisture. Here's a simple recipe that you can create at home:
Foot care treatment recipe:
• Shea or cocoa butter (1/4 cup)
• Coconut oil (¼ cup)
• Soy wax or Candelilla wax (3 tablespoons)
• Magnesium flakes (1/4 cup)
• Boiling water (2 tablespoons)
• Essential oils (optional)
Treatment guide: In a bowl, mix the magnesium flakes and boiling water together. Stir until thick and wait for it to cool. To make the oil mixture, mix the coconut oil, wax, and butter in a mason jar. Place these ingredients in a pan with one inch of water. Melt the ingredients on medium heat then pour into a medium-sized bowl and let it cool. Using a blender, mix the cooled oil and magnesium flakes mixture. Lastly, add your choice of essential oils. Apply the treatment liberally to your dry or cracked heels and let it work it overnight. Store the remaining in the refrigerator for future use.
